Move Materials With A Planned Lift
A telehandler uses a telescopic boom to place materials beyond the reach of a conventional forklift. Typical tasks include unloading palletised supplies and moving materials to an agreed landing position. It is a materials-handling machine, so it belongs in a different selection process from a platform designed to raise people.
Tell us the heaviest load, its dimensions and the height and horizontal distance of the landing point. Identify whether the load is palletised, loose or unusually shaped. These details determine the machine and approved attachment, and help establish whether the proposed lift is practical before transport is arranged.
Read Capacity At The Working Position
A telehandler’s nominal capacity is not its capacity at every extension. The load chart applies to a particular machine configuration, attachment and operating position. As reach increases, the allowable load can change, so a machine chosen only by its headline lifting capacity may not suit the job.
Provide reliable load weights, including packaging and the handling attachment where relevant. If a supplier cannot establish the weight, resolve that before lifting. A landing position behind a wall or scaffold needs a measured distance from the machine position. Do not estimate a difficult lift from a photograph alone or assume another machine’s chart applies.
Traffic Routes, Visibility And Ground
Decide where the telehandler will unload, travel and turn before delivery. Keep the route separate from people wherever possible and identify blind corners, entrances and reversing areas. A busy yard may need a different movement plan from a closed building site, even when the load is identical.
The HSE telehandler guidance identifies collisions and overturning as key hazards. It also explains why prepared surfaces and competent, authorised drivers matter. Rough-terrain tyres do not make unstable ground acceptable, and working near excavations requires particular attention to the condition and capacity of the ground.
Attachments, Checks And Legal Duties
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, known as LOLER, apply to lifting operations at work. PUWER also applies to the equipment’s suitability and safe use. Read the HSE safe-lifting guidance when deciding who will plan and supervise the work.
Use only attachments approved for the machine and intended operation. Confirm attachment locking, the correct load chart and handover instructions. Pre-use checks and defect reporting must be part of the daily routine. If your task involves reaching a building with people, enquire about a purpose-designed MEWP rather than improvising a work platform on forks.
What Changes A Telehandler Hire Quote
Telehandler hire costs vary with lift capacity, reach, machine dimensions, hire length and attachment requirements. Transport depends on the machine and site access. Operator provision, fuel arrangements and site restrictions also need to be agreed, with any damage terms and VAT clearly stated in the quotation.
Describe delivery booking procedures, gate restrictions and the planned unloading point in your enquiry. A missed site slot can disrupt other trades, so coordinate the machine with the materials programme. Confirm who can accept the handover, where the machine will be secured and how it will be made ready for collection at the end of hire.
Your Hire, Step By Step
- 01
Describe The Job
Tell us the site location, dates and task for your telehandler hire enquiry. Include measured height, reach and the load or people involved.
- 02
Check The Site And Specification
Review the route, ground and proposed machine with the supplier. Resolve unknown dimensions and agree operator, delivery and working arrangements before booking.
- 03
Handover, Use And Collection
Accept the machine with its instructions and relevant records. Complete familiarisation and checks, use it within the agreed limits, and follow the supplier’s off-hire procedure.
Telehandler Hire Questions
How Do I Choose A Telehandler Capacity?
Telehandler capacity must be checked against the load chart at the intended height and forward reach. Supply the load weight, dimensions, attachment and landing position when requesting hire. The largest number in a machine description is only a starting point, so the supplier must confirm the proposed configuration before the lift.
Does Telehandler Hire Include A Driver?
Telehandler hire does not automatically include a driver. State whether you need an operator or have a trained, competent and authorised person available on site. The quote should identify what is included, while your site arrangements should cover induction, pedestrian separation, load information and responsibility for planning the lifting operation.
Can A Telehandler Lift People?
A telehandler should not be treated as a substitute for a purpose-designed personnel platform. Lifting people involves specific equipment and legal conditions, and improvised baskets or pallets are unsuitable. Describe your access task so a MEWP can be considered, with any exceptional telehandler proposal assessed separately by competent people before use.
